Mads Peitersen is a professional digital artist that lives in Denmark. His gallery consists of unique artworks, so i advise you to make him a visit after reading what he has to say!

First, please introduce yourself to those that might not know you yet.

My name is Mads Peitersen. I am 33 years old and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark. Early in my life I quit highschool in order to pursue an education in Animation, Illustration and Art. Since then I have been working with everything, from Creating art for animation, Tv Series and movies, computer games titles to advertising. Right now I am working for Tactile Entertainment, creating iPhone and Android games. It is very fulfilling and I really love doing it :) It brings out the kid in me, sharpens my creative mind.

You are a very successful artist, what do you believe are your most important features that made you pop out of the crowd?

I think it is important to be original in your work. If possible, create a brand for yourself. Define what it is that makes you an great artist, what is it about your art that shines or pops out and then force this idea and build on top of it. If you have a great idea or product the audience will find you.

What do you want to express through your artworks? What inspires you?

I played with ideas about how we, as consumers, behave towards and treat our gadgets or phones. You often hear people say: "My phone is dead" or "I can not live without my phone." The metaphor is that a really rather simple and very dead gadget gives people a feeling of being more present, more alive. And they relate in larger degree with these gadgets almost on par with a pet or a friend. Therefore it is only natural to paint these personal gadgets as living organisms ;) So the idea is that these gadgets are becoming so advanced and cool that we almost treat them as if they were alive. In a way users become attached to them :) After you have had your Xbox360 or your iPhone for a while you slowly begin to see yourself as connected to these brands or gadgets. They almost become an extension of yourself or your hands. It is the feeling that we connect and attach to these machines individually.

In your opinion, the quality of your art depends more on technique or on its message?

I my case of my art i think it's a fine balance between quality and the message. My message is very clear, but can not be conveyed unless the actual artwork is strongly executed. The story is something real, its about real gadgets that we all know and feel. Therefore some level of realism was necessary.

Your works are unique - do you believe that what you do requires a particular skill or it's just about the practice? What skills do you consider to be the most important?

Repetition is the mother of all skills, and with that comes great practice. I think the greatest artists would agree on this point. I think it's important not to give up, keep trying new stuff and experiment with new ideas. For myself, when I look at the various and extremely talented artists here at devianART, I still think I have much to learn.

Most of the artists wish for their own style. How would you describe yours, and how did you develop it?

That's a hard question, but I would describe my style as iconic 2D spiced with realism. I used to study and work with Classical Animation, and thereby have a heavy influence from the original 2D Disney classics. Later on I started working in Games. And here a more realistic approach combined with 3D was needed. So I guess my style evolved from there.

What are your favorite tools and how were you introduced to them? Did you experiment or someone recommended them to you?

I used to work a lot on Wacom Intuos 3 but now my Wacom Cintiq 24 Hd is a clear winner. Wacom has always created great tools for artists working on a computer. It comes with experience and as a professional artist it also depends on what tools your office provides.

What role has deviantART in your artistic life? Do you use it solely to expose your art or you also make friends and learn? Why did you join?

I joined deviantART because I needed somewhere to put the new stuff I was working on. Ever since I first joined I have been a fan, and prefer dA way over any other online artsite or community. There is so much talent in here, and so many different approaches. I think it is fantastic that everybody has a voice, no matter of age, level of skill or art type. And yes I have several dA friends in here, it's great. :)

Show us the pieces that you are most proud of. Do they have a story behind them? What is the reason you consider them your favorites?

Art meats technology by Madspeitersen  Unexpected Journey by Madspeitersen

These are the three of my Anatomy Design I am most proud of. The Xbox controller because it was the very first one I published here, the iPhone because of the many reactions from all over the world and Unexpected Journey because I had so much fun creating it. I think the meanings of these speak for themselves.

From my other art I really like:

The River God by Madspeitersen  Conquistador by Madspeitersen

I think visually these two pieces define me as an artist. That is my style to the core. When I create art, I like to hint just enough for your mind and imagination to start wander. I think if you give away too much you kill the imagination and magic of good storytelling. I want you to look at the picture and make up the stories yourself. What is it that you think is going on ;)

Regarding your own art, what do you think has been your greatest achievement so far?

I have 12 years of professional work experience. Everything from LEGO to the Hitman games. And working for a big client, game or brand is very cool and something I am very proud of. But my personal works, the ones i'm showing here on deviantArt is by far what drives me the most, and definitely what i'm most proud of. I must say that seeing the reactions that my Anatomy Art attracted really intrigued me, and it's something that I am very proud of. Thanks a lot to all of you guys ;)

Do you have favorite artists on deviantART? Could you show us some art that you like and/or inspire you?

I don't know where to begin really, there are so many. But here are two of my favourite artists:
I really like :devmedders: because his artwork is so solid. The environment just sparkles with imagination and colors. I really see them and feel inspiration. Also his character reflects that colorful and scenographic emotion.

Artsammich creates these fantastic character and caricature designs. I am very impressed with the level of detail and design pushed to the limit. Man, I want to learn some tricks and techniques from this guy. Wow :)

How do you choose your models/themes? Are you inspired by something in particular or it all comes from your imagination?

I try to stay tuned with what is happening, i follow trends on the internet, explore new styles that are being developed and so on. Actually one of my foremost inspirations as an artist are good old fashioned novels and books. Here you can find everything from science, history, fantasy, the occult and so on. It's a brilliant and never ending source of inspiration. Whenever I paint or draw I set the mood to the music. Epic soundtracks from movies are just fantastic to listen to while working. It's full of emotion, life and energy.

What drawn you towards this type of digital art? How was your first experience with this kind of art and how long ago was it?

My first initial contact with digital art was back in year 2000 when I was finishing animation school. But when I started working at IO Interactive for the Hitman games in 2002 I slowly began to catch up. It was hard for me to lay down my pencils and work on the computer.

Is there anything else you would like to add? A few words for your audience and/or other artists, maybe?

I hope that people understand the metaphors and see what I am trying to create. Personally I think they are on to something right, and I wish to be as creative in my ideas as I can be. It's almost a life goal of mine to be creative, to create fantastic or weird stuff. And hopefully somewhere in the other end it will inspire or amuse a lot of people. Thanks a lot.
